I entreat you, my brethren and sisters, to be self-reliant in the strength of Jesus. Do not hang the weight of your perplexities and burdens upon your ministers. Christ has invited you to come to him, your burden-bearer (Ellen G. White, The Signs of the Times, September 4, 1879).
In 2023, Seventh-day Adventist Church pastors were asked what were the most significant challenges that they found in their work. Typical responses, by Division, are shown below.
Pastors around the world face mounting challenges, with financial and resource limitations being among the most pressing. Many pastors report inadequate funds, unresolved pandemic-related financial stress, and minimal support from members—issues that directly hinder ministry operations and outreach.
These financial concerns are often tied to post-pandemic struggles. Many churches continue to experience member apathy, reduced attendance, and spiritual stagnation. The post-pandemic effects are still felt in weakened engagement and disrupted church rhythms.
Leadership and organizational stress further complicate ministry. Pastors cite disorganized structures, poor communication with leaders, and overwhelming workloads. Combined with conflict within congregations (ranging from relational disputes to resistance to change), these factors contribute to burnout and frustration.
There’s also a marked decline in spiritual enthusiasm and evangelistic momentum. Pastors report that many members lack passion for mission or fail to engage in outreach efforts. At the same time, discipleship and member engagement suffer as small group efforts and leadership training are difficult to sustain.
Other widespread concerns include losing the younger generation, cultural and language barriers, and geographic isolation—all of which complicate pastoral care and mission. In some areas, pastors also face doctrinal confusion, emotional exhaustion, and even security threats, including war and violence.
Challenges by Division

Despite these challenges, pastors remain committed. More than ever, they need encouragement, practical support, and intentional investment from their faith communities.
Let’s continue to keep our pastors in our prayers and reach out to them to see if there is a way we can help them lighten the burden.
